Tyne Tunnels
Tyne Tunnels

It was designed for a daily traffic throughput of 24,000 vehicles, although in recent years it regularly served 38,000 customers per day.

In order to meet growing customer demands the Tyne Tunnels owner, the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA), proposed the development of a second vehicle tunnel.

TWITA put forward a plan to the Secretary of State for Transport that would revitalise travel across the Tyne. This plan is known as the New Tyne Crossing Project.

Construction of a second vehicle tunnel under the River Tyne
(Completed Feb 2011)

Full refurbishment of the original Tunnel Tunnel
(Completed Nov 2011)

Redesigned southern interchange at the Jarrow junction of the vehicle tunnels
(Completed Nov 2011)

Development of a new tolls plaza on the southbound approach to the tunnel (Completed Nov 2011)

In November 2007 TT2 was appointed as the project Concessionaire to design, build, part-finance and operate the new vehicle tunnel and other developments associated with the New Tyne Crossing project and to operate all Tyne Tunnels until 2037.
